As it seems that Global Giving is having challenges on a regular basis I thought it would be easier to combine them all in one thread. Here is the latest: --------------- The Global Open ChallengeThe Global Open Challenge is an opportunity for organizations around the globe to raise funds for their projects and the chance to become long term members of the GlobalGiving Community. A record 167 organizations from 40 different countries implementing projects ranging from children’s education, peace building to clean drinking water, are currently participating in the Challenge. The Challenge is for participants to generate donations for their projects between August 18, 2009 (12:01 EDT) and Sepember 18, 2009 (11:59 pm EDT). The top three fundraising projects (most dollars raised) will also receive supplementary cash bonuses from GlobalGiving of $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000, respectively. The project with the greatest number of unique donors will be awarded a bonus of $3,000. ANY Project that is able to raise a minimum of $4,000 and at least 50 separate donors will be invited to stay on at GlobalGiving. These projects will be eligible to continue receiving donations from the general public, private and corporate foundations through www.globalgiving.com. ------------------- So far one project from the really long list has been secured.

What a great idea - thanks for sharing the site, Mona - but wow, it's going to be hard to narrow down the list because there are so many wonderful projects here! Makes me wish I had a LOT more money to give - sigh!

"Educate and empower girls in Anupshahar, India" has already been secured together with 2 other projects! There are some more that have received already enough money but need more donors to reach the minimum of 50 people. There are still 23 days left for the challenge. If you want to take a closer look, here is the link: http://www.globalgiving.com/dy/v2/globalchallenge.html

Sorry to bother you again with this challenge, but I have read some minutes ago the description of one of the other projects and it nearly broke my heart. Especially as I was the first person ever to donate to it. Here it is: Safe Water to 120 Albino Families in TanzaniaFor an Albino in Tanzania, fetching water from a natural source and getting home safely, one need to be extra lucky, even when is armed with a machete. There have been since last year albino killings in Tanzania as the albino organs, particularly genitals, limbs, breasts, fingers and the tongue are in high demand by people involved in mining and fishing activities in the Lake Victoria Zone, especially Mwanza, Shinyanga, Kagera and Mara regions."They cut my daughter quickly,” she said, making hacking motions with her hands. She had dropped out of school because of short-sightedness a common problem for albinos. - Mother of a killed Albino daugheter, A victim of Albino killingsMariam (28, the poor lady on the photo below) from Ntobeye Village in Ngara district, Kagera region, was lucky enough to have survived after she was invaded last year at her home by two unknown people who entered through the window while sleeping and chopped her both arms. She cried for help and neighbours turned up on time and the inviders disappeared with one of her arm, while the second one was left hanging and had to be cut off at the hospital as could not be re-attached. By then she was six months pregnant and the bleeding was threatening not only her life but also her unborn baby, who is now doing well with her hand caped Albino mother. She might have survived this attack, but the threat remains with her to date, and this further hand caps her living.Through this project, some sixty water storage tanks will be constructed at the homes of vulnerable Albino Families to enable them to harvest and store rain water for their needs. Also provide skin protection, vision aid and home solar lighting. If you want to read more, there is a word-documented attached that offers additional information: http://www.globalgiving.com/pfil/3567/projdoc.doc

I have been following this tragedy on the BBC ever since they started to cover it and am delighted I finally found a possibility to do more than read about it. Marianne

I made a donation to the Albino Water project under my name and also under my dad's name so it should count as two unique donors - I really hope it reaches both $$ and donor goals by the end of the challenge!
