God bless the Atheists! They've done it! Thank you alan for alerting us to this wonderful accomplishment. It is indeed a fantastic goal, $2,000,000, that the Atheist team has achieved However, since Atheists (the term atheism originated from the Greek ἄθεος (atheos), meaning "without gods") hold the position that there are no deities, a "blessing" from a nonexistent entity is most likely fatuous if not denigrating.

Thank you, Geoff, for your etymological explications, three years of Classical Greek on my part perhaps being insufficiently trustworty to grasp the subtleties of my own utterance. It is possible, I imagine, that some of the more militant Atheists will take my light-hearted congratulations with some level of offence, though they shall find themselves in an awkward position, being without a deity to implore to curse me. Perhaps the Freethinkers in the team will understand the goodnatured intent, whilst the more moderate Atheists will simply find my comment risible, not for the juxtaposition of imprecations of beneficence and implications of godlessness, and hence the intrinsic ineffectiveness of said imprecations, but perhaps for my delusional state which doubtless they shall consider nugatory. As to the Agnostics, one can only claim ignorance. As long as they don't respond with importunings of humourless pedantry.
I find myself incapable of engaging in a celebratory libation in honour of the Atheists on this day of their accomplishment, but perhaps the thought of it shall suffice to demonstrate solidarity.

Is there a limit to the number of teams a Kiva Lender can join? The members of the Washington State team just received a message about needing help for some North Carolina effort or other. The poster has been registered with Kiva since August 28th and is already a member of 21 teams - 10 of which are various local areas. He has even started his own team (he is the sole member). I have no problem with lenders belonging to multiple teams, particularly when they also have a lot of loans to spread around. But surely there is some limit? (This isn't the first one I have encountered where their teams outnumber their loans 20 to 1.) Dan

I got that message on GLBT and one team member complained about it already. It appeared to me to be a pattern of joining large teams...

http://www.kiva.org/updates/kiva/2011/06/20/announcing-kiva-cup.html We're thrilled to announce a brand new competition between Kiva Lending Teams... the first ever Kiva Cup will kick off on June 21st!
What's the Kiva Cup? The Kiva Cup is a series of competitions where Kiva Lending Teams will be given a specific goal and a defined time to achieve it. Competitions will be announced quickly, so teams will have to hustle to meet the goal.
Some competitions will be easier for bigger teams; some will be easier for smaller teams. For some, it won't matter at all. We'll be rotating contests to make sure everyone has a shot at winning.
. . .
For the kickoff Kiva Cup competition, we're keeping it simple. To win, your team needs to get the most new lenders to join and make a loan by 11:59 PM PDT on July 4, 2011. The contest begins at 12:01 AM PDT June 21st.
. . .
We like that you're competitive, but this is just a game. Our decisions will be final. Enjoy yourselves and have fun!
Perhaps this is part of the gamification of Kiva that was foreshadowed by Premal's remarks last year about Zynga being Kiva's biggest competitor.

Perhaps this is part of the gamification of Kiva that was foreshadowed by Premal's remarks last year about Zynga being Kiva's biggest competitor. Hello Peter - Those earlier comments were more about badges and the like, not a promotion like the Kiva Cup (or the October Birthday Challenge). There was a subsequent article where Premal clarified some of his thoughts around this topic: In any case, any of that stuff is a long ways away. There's been a lot of requested features, and the team is busy working on those and other site enhancements! Speaking of which: I just got confirmation that the "Loans At Risk" stats will be added to the borrower profile pages! :-) It will take a little time, but I'm glad it's in the queue! Best, John
