$1600 dollar loan so a family can be connected to a clean water line and a waste line. This is the kind of thing that saves lives, as well as improving quality of life.

Maurice M. Mansaray's Group

Salone Microfinance Trust (SMT), a partner of Kiva based in Makeni, is very pleased to present to you this group of primary school teachers from Kabala, a town in northern Sierra Leone. They have come to SMT/Kiva lenders to request a loan of 9,400,000 Sierra Leonean Leones (SLL) to meet their immediate financial challenges. At the end of each month, they will repay the loan using their monthly salaries.

Maurice is the leader of this group of teachers. Maurice was born in Yagala, a village near Kabala. He is sixty years old and married to a businesswoman. Maurice has five children who are attending primary and secondary schools. He has been a teacher for forty years. He has requested this loan in order to buy house building materials for the construction of a family dwelling.

"Our daughters can contribute just as much to society as our sons, and our common prosperity will be advanced by allowing all humanity - men and women - to reach their full potential. I do not believe that women must make the same choices as men in order to be equal, and I respect those women who choose to live their lives in traditional roles. But it should be their choice. That is why the United States will partner with any Muslim-majority country to support expanded literacy for girls, and to help young women pursue employment through micro-financing that helps people live their dreams." - President Barack Obama, June 4, 2009
