Richard Loayza Alatta, age 22, lives in his mother’s house. She supports him in everything, and she sometimes works on the farms. They live in the Los Pollitos neighborhood in Cachiche-Ica. He is a mototaxi (three wheeled motorized vehicle) driver. Four years ago he rented a mototaxi, and he worked with it daily from 6:30 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Now he has been able to finance his own mototaxi. This generates greater income, which he can use to help his mother.

He is asking for a loan because his house fell with the earthquake. The state is currently giving vouchers for the damages, but they need to make a deposit in a financial institution as a down payment. He wants to make his mother’s dream of having a house from sturdy material come true. He is a very responsible person who enjoys good references from his neighbors.

Cordova Saldaña Marlid is 22, and she lives in Asentamiento Oscar Sánchez Dulanto near Ica. She lives with her husband, a “mototaxi” (three wheeled motorized vehicle) driver. They have a three year old son, and they live in her mother’s house. She is a field worker. They have built part of the house they were given. They were given the house because they were left without a house due to the earthquake. They are getting ahead once again.

She sells soft drinks and mineral water at the Puente Blanco and Divino Maestro-Ica (South Pan-American) crossing. She has been selling in the summertime for four years. In the winter she works in the field. She is a very responsible person. The couple wants us to help them so that she is able to invest more in the business and improve their house at the same time. Her goal is to give her son a better quality of life.

Edgar Antonio Blandon Guevara lives with his life partner and their two year old son in the Raúl Roja neighborhood. He works as a master builder, and this is the primary source of income for the family. His wife does domestic work. For a long time he has had problems with the electrical system in his house. That is why he is requesting a loan to buy electric materials, which will allow him to make the necessary repairs. This is for the good of the members of his household because a short circuit threatens the safety of his family and the loss of his home. There is a potential threat of fire if the repairs are not done quickly.

I've been away a while, haven't I? Sorry about that. Spectacular health failure and all.

Anyway, if anyone is wondering who to loan to, could I recommend this gentleman?

http://www.kiva.org/lend/217373

"Sr. Diogenes Francisco Ramos, from the town of Villanueva, works as a security guard at the local health center. He has worked there for nine years, working 12-hour shifts at night. During the days, he makes extra money doing other work. Driving a taxi, for example. He works hard to ensure that he can support his wife and two teen-age daughters who are between 15 and 20 years old. The family has decided to make improvements to their house which now lacks both a roof and a door. They are applying for a loan to buy construction materials such as cement and roofing so that they can continue the construction and have a better place to live. "

If that's the family home that he's stood in front of there... well, I'd say he definitely needs a hand.

Typical, I use up all my credit for this month and THEN I spot this guy:

http://www.kiva.org/lend/216888

"Wilder Enrique Olivas Ávila is a craftsman; he manufactures shoes in a shop located in greater Condega.

He is asking for a loan that will be used to complete the amount he needs to buy a piece of property (a lot). He wants it because he thinks that in the future he’d like to build a house where his family will reside.

He started working in a shoe shop 13 years ago aiming at earning personal income. In time, he acquired quite a bit of experience in the field that has helped him to have good yields at work. He works from 8am until 5pm, Monday through Saturday. It’s worth noting that when he started working he went to school at night in order to complete secondary school.

Wilder is married and has 5 children one of whom is still school aged, in fifth grade and still living at home with his parents.

This is Wilder’s first loan request at our institution. He is content that the opportunity to acquire this loan to buy the lot has been offered because his earnings are low and not sufficient to save up enough to buy it on his own. "

Anyone in the mood to help a very hard working guy have his own home? Given that this loan is just to buy the plot of land so he can get started, we may end up seeing him again.

Housing loan to Afghanistan - second one like this in two days as well. Not something you see every day!

http://www.kiva.org/lend/227714

Quote
Dost Mohammad is the son of Khirulah. He lives in district 8, Kabul, Afghanistan. He is 45 years old and is married and has four children. He lives in a family of 8 members including his father and mother because he is the oldest among the children and the responsibility of taking care of his elderly father and mother falls on him.

He needs to build two more rooms onto his house because their house is very small and by building two new rooms he can have room to store things. He wants to receive an individual loan to purchase construction materials. He is very pleased with this process of loans in Afghanistan.

A teacher, a beautiful photo and a philosophical write up....

Maira Karabekova's Group

Sooner or later almost every one of us begins to think of further life plans. Every individual has his or her own. Education, family, job, hobby — the most common plans of a human being. No matter what country you live in, what race or nationality you belong to, what kind of hobby you like to spend your free time with, you want to live a worthy life. Unfortunately, unstable political and economical situations are not the best circumstances in which to build a worthwhile life. Nevertheless, people by their very nature are trying to improve their way of life.

Maira Karabekova has the status of group leader. She is 58, married, and has two adult daughters. Her husband’s profession is hard, but not so well-paid; he is a teacher. He is already on a pension, but still has to support his family. The purpose of this loan is to buy building material for major repairs to the house. In order to repay the loan, Maira’s husband will use his pension money and his salary. In the future, both parents want to give their daughters in marriage to good men and organize both of their weddings.

Mayra Guadalupe Garcia Rojas

Mrs Mayra no longer works because of a disability and is dependent on her husband. She has had two previous loans with us and has been very reliable with her payments. She is very happy for the support which our foundation has given her. One of her projects was to put down tiled flooring in her house. She is a very humble and hard-working woman and on this occasion she is going to install a front door in her house because she has an 8 year-old daughter and she wants to keep her safe. The safety of her small daughter is very important to her.

$650 remaining to fund on a 14 month loan through 3 star Fundación para la Vivienda Progresiva (FVP) currency loss possible.

Excellent and for this team on-topic blog post today from Stephanie Sibal, Fellows class 14

The Bare Necessities

It oftentimes begins with the aspiration of achieving something bigger: many enterprising Kiva borrowers request loans to start new ventures or expand businesses. Some rely on a Kiva loan to remedy a setback.

However, not all borrowers take out loans with the intention of starting or growing a business. Coming from places where running water, electricity, and sometimes even a roof for their house are considered luxuries, countless borrowers request loans to improve the quality of their lives.

Three months and nearly a dozen trips into rural Cambodian provinces of Kampong Chhnang, Takeo, and Kandal have provided me with opportunities to chat intimately with borrowers who are grateful to lenders for allowing them what the developed world calls “the bare necessities.”

Vaccines
Visitors to Cambodia’s countryside know that they face a multitude of potential health risks that vaccinations can help to prevent, some of which include malaria, hepatitis A and B, and typhoid. While vaccines are relatively easy to obtain in the developed world, the lack of vaccine coverage in countries such as Cambodia are startling. According to a USAID survey, Cambodia’s full vaccination coverage is less than 40%. Indeed, it is an eye-opening experience when a borrower says that what they would like most in the world is proper health.

A remote Takeo village occupied by predominantly ethnic Vietnamese-Cambodians is also home to Pha:  Kiva borrower, pig breeder, and rice wine maker.

Borrower in Takeo province, Cambodia

Pha’s husband is a teacher at the local school. They raised four children, one of whom is now a school teacher like his father. Pha did not request a Kiva loan to start a business—rather, she used her loan to pay for vaccinations for her family.

“My business is well. I know that [vaccinations] are important, and I need to care for my family.”

Toilets
Rural Cambodians see no humor in the word “toilet.” More than a Western luxury, the commode is a life-changing addition that paves the way for proper sanitation and prevention of infectious diseases. Yet so many in Cambodia and around the world do not have access to one.

In fact, more people in the world have cell phones than access to a toilet, according to Water.org. In Kampong Chhnang, Sum used his loan to install a toilet for his family’s use. It comes as no surprise that oftentimes, rural provinces are a germophobe’s biggest nightmare, with pollutants and infectants abound.

With his loan from Kiva, Sum can improve his family’s health and well-being, and potentially prevent some of the many diseases that her village and communities around the world are prone to.
