For those with PCs with limited specs to use SecondLife.

http://www.movablelife.net

This is a browser based SecondLife viewer developed by Japanese venture, 3Di.

With this, you do not need to install SecondLife client on your machine.  Thumbs Up

We got an office at the non profit sim !!!!! Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin
We will be in space #23.
we are all set to move in. Joe and I were hanging out in it today, making sure it was clean and such.  We're just waiting till we get let into the 'group' that is allowed to build in that area.

We are thinking of Jan5th as a party, 10:30-12 am Pacific time.  Its a Saturday.  Would that work for people?

I'll post pictures when I get things set up.

Here are some pictures of our new office at the non-profit commons in Second life.

The office is quite large so we made a 'path' and tried to put the displays in logical order.  There is a front and back door, though people come in both doors (and even fall through the ceiling).

Here is our 'front' door

And you can see the desk and the language tree, which has all of the translations on it.

On the desk is a basket you can leave us mail in, and a computer that shows images of Kiva clients. There is also information about all the Kiva things you can do in Second Life on the desk.

Besides the desk is the Kiva newstand, with all the new things going on.
Beside the stand is our tree of free Kiva items. We give away the green rubber Kiva bracelets, and a t-shirt and jean jacket and flyer. We also have a free display stand that gives away all these free items that you can put on your own second life land.

Further along the path is a donation box, and a present with a kiva gift certificate.  On the walls is info about Kiva and pictures from the calendar :}

In the corner is the 'turning Linden into loans' display that explains how the money in second life gets turned into real life kiva loans.

Inside the 'room' is a book of our loans and journal entries of our loans (secondlife group) and our latest loan. And also links to shops that are maintained by kivafriends where all the money goes to our group. So you can buy second life clothes and office items and the money goes to Kiva.

We have a display and link to kiva friends, and to the kiva shopping store, and all the other ways you can help kiva in real life (goodsearch, amazon, etc).

That transparent Kiva sign is the back door. We have a donation box by the back door.
We also have a TV that will stream in videos (when I get it working).
And a display for Kiva fellows and Kiva translators.

The bus display is Kiva Friends SL tours; we'll meet regularly and go check out other sims.

Our opening party is JANUARY 5th, at 10:30 am - 12 pm Pacific time. All are invited.

Julia - What great work you've done in Second Life. Being a Mac user with not much power to run Second Life, I gave up on it shortly after signing up. It does just amaze me the kind of things that go on in a virtual world. LifeChurch, which is founded in Oklahoma, has a SecondLife presence and thus people can go to virtual church. I wonder if they will die and go to virtual heaven.

Good work and good luck with it. There may eventually be a SL virtual MFI, making loans to virtual SL businesses.

How weird a world we live in.

Nice Job Julia!  Yesss! Place looks great.  Lot's of hard work there!  I hope 2008 will offer me some time to 'fly around' in SL again.  I also hope my mother stops playing bumper cars at the mall.... Shocked Laugh

What a difference a week makes. Last Friday we were at the weekly non profits meeting, which, other than roll call, I must admit I largely ignored and just used as an opportunity to catch up on things with Julia.

We weren't expecting anything until next year (we've been waiting since like August, so I wasn't holding my breath). Then Julia got an email from them saying something opened up. Apparently another non profit didn't have the time to maintain their office and were probably kicked out. Naturally we jumped on it and got our office up pretty quick (record time?) thanks to Julia already having lots of the stuff ready to go. Yeah, we don't mess around!  Laugh

Second Life is a strange place. I haven't ventured out much other than those weekly meetings and the Kiva related things. Julia has a nice historical medieval village which is cool to walk around in. I checked out virtual offices of some of the presidential campaigns, some of which I think are unintentionally hilarious. Anyway, hopefully Kiva having this virtual office there will get some of those people to check out the site and become lenders. Just another place to promote the cause is what it really comes down to.

Attached are my contributions, for those who can't or have no time/desire to get into the program. These are the information panels seen on the walls around the office (click to enlarge).

Interestingly, LifeChurch and the Nonprofit Commons were developed by the same design studio around the same time.

Julia and Joe,

I know I am repeating what I said before, but you guys are really amazing. The office looks supercool and I am sure it will attract new lenders. This is truly is amazing!
