I found the Second Life Exchange over the weekend, which is like ebay in Second Life.  Its FREE to list things, they just take a small (5%) of the profits when things sell.

So I thought this was a great place to give out our SL Kiva wristbands (made by Latvinda from Belgium whose RL name I'm not 100% sure on, please out yourself here if you want :}). I tried to make a Kiva bracelet my first week in SL, and it turned out (quoting Joe) 'like a lobster on your wrist'.  This one, is much better.

The listing can be found here and you can see it from the web, you don't have to be logged in to Second Life.

This might be a great way to teach people about KIVA. People will find this auction as they go through the exchange looking to buy stuff. if someone wants it, they order it, and then it gets delivered to their avatar (person) when they log onto second life.  This ad can be easily modified and we can ad links.  I am planning on also putting up our new KIVA jean jacket, KIVA shirt, and even the new KIVA display.

So please let me know if you have any suggestions on how to make the ad better. (don't worry about being critical, its good if its constructive).  The ad is real easy to modify and gets updated within minutes.  I haven't seen any other non-profits do this yet, but I'm thinking I might be starting a trend. For the record, KIVA was first.  Cheesy. It is making me think we could make some cool stuff that people would want (that we give away free for the advertising content).  Like a KIVA car. Or a house with KIVA pictures.  A scripted office with one of the pose balls being 'make a loan to KIVA'.  Oh, the possibilities...

I popped into Second Life last night/yesterday evening for the grand opening of the Non-Profit Commons. It was interesting. Kind of like a simulcast with speakers at the virtual location while they did a live press conference somewhere (sitting in the same positions) and interacting with both real reporters and virtual people.

As Julia mentioned, Kiva is going to have an office there soon. The organizers are pretty big fans and are lenders too, if I'm not mistaken. They also have a lot of fund raising ideas. So it'll be interesting to see how it turns out. If anything, it should bring Kiva more attention since this Second Life location has a lot of hype and press (and other big non-profits).

The official site is: http://www.nonprofitcommons.org if you'd like to read more about what they're doing.

Anyway, below are some snapshots.

FREE Kiva display stands are now available on the SL exchange. And someone has managed to find it already and get one, before I"ve had the chance to advertise! But don't worry, I have an unlimited supply  Cheesy

Get you SL Kiva display stand http://www.slexchange.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=329653

The sides you can't see has 'kiva fast facts' on one side and a loan on the other. And when you touch the display you get handed a teleport to the www.kiva.org website, and a notecard all about KIVA.

This stand is only 2 prims, and you can put it up in your home, castle, office, store, or wherever you would like. Fully transferable, copyable, and modifiable.

Here's an update on all the Kiva things happening in Second Life.

We are still waiting for an office in the Non-Profit Commons, but another sim was donated and we are on the 'for sure' list.  The price of the first sim was estimated to be $40,000 US dollars, so this is a nice donation.  Kiva is very visible in the NPC; Joe and I have been going to the weekly meetings, making Kiva usually one of the only organizations with more than 1 member. Here we are at the meeting last week to discuss the new sim.

Here is one of the weekly meetings.  They are on Fridays at 8:30am Pacific Time.  Joe and I send each other (instant messages) Ims. Last week was strange, we both got interviewed at the same time by someone (private ims with that person) while we were talking to each other. She took pictures of us and our info is posted here: http://secondlife.techsoup.org/.   She put pictures of us up on flicker too. I don't know why my glasses look like sunglasses, but make me look cooler! Especially on my trim, fit avatar body!

Here is the meeting.

The meetings are open to anyone who wants to attend.

You can learn more about it at techsoup.org http://secondlife.techsoup.org/.  OH, look, Kiva is at the top of the blog today!
.********************************
Elron, the KivaSL group organizer, is busy not just making loans (our lender page is here:http://www.kiva.org/lender/secondlife1494, he is also starting a kiva stall network and selling things in second life to make money for our kiva loans.  This group, by the way, is now set up so that the money can't come out, it can only be re-lent.  That means you can use donations as a tax-write off, and Elron is organizing all of that (with Fiona's advice). He is also sending out thank you for large donations.

Here he is with me in my village (you can also seem my loom and weaving, and my pottery wheel).  Elron is setting up a Kiva donation box for me, so the money goes directly to the group and I don't have to do any bookeeping.  He also made a 'freebe' box (pictured on the right) which gives you info, the jean jacket, bracelet, etc.
. Here is one of the stalls he has set up, you can see we are in a building in a mall type place.  He bought the inventory for resell, so anything anyone buys here goes to our group for loans.

I am going to make some things for him to sell, and I am hoping we will get some creative kiva friends making things also.  Its a way we can turn time into money, building isn't that difficult. Explaining to a kiva client how we raise virtual money is probably much, much more difficult.

I am starting (as of about an hour ago) to work with Naomi about recruiting translators in Second Life.  I think it might be a great resource, especially since we can go find people who speak a particular language and ask them in person.  We can just pop into the Vietnam area, for example and see if we can find someone interested. We will have info in our office to make it easy and fun to volunteer.

Hope to see you all in Second Life. Remember, second life is free, you just need a good internet connection and video card.  We will help you figure things out when you get in world.  Send me an instant message by searching on 'people' and julles bouchard.

Without asking, we just got some land donated to us (ok, we'll be buying it for 1L a plot). Two people want to give us land, on the condition we resell it and use the money for kiva stuff.

We are so there.  I have Elron working the deal, he's our SL treasurer and runs the secondlife group.  If anyone knows anything about selling land in SL please let me know.  I'm thinking since its for charity I can advertise it on tech soup.

Are there any premium paying second lifers out there who do NOT own land? I just realized I'm not sure if Elron is a premium member (pays by the month).  The purchase of this land will raise my tier for the month more than the reselling price of the land.  If you're interested please drop me a note or Im inworld (julles bouchard). I might just have you buy and hold some of my land while this deal goes through. Diana, do you have land you can buy for your tier?

Never thought we needed to figure out land donations!  But its all good.  Money to kiva to developing countries - its good.  I try to picture myself explaining where the money comes from to a kiva client though.  'you see we get donations from virtual people, some of whom make money by camping & sitting around in a virtual world'

Sure, its easy. You ask Fiona  Laugh That's how we did it.

She'll need to know the group info. And I think the group leader collects names for tax receipts, as donations are donations and not loans.

Wow, this is very cool, Julia!

Diana, do you have land you can buy for your tier?

I can buy one more 512 plot and stay within my current tier, but beyond that I'd get bumped up to the next premium tier.  How big is/are the plot(s) we're being offered?  Drop me a LM, I'd love to go visit.

Uh, if Second Life is virtual, how do you get real money for Kiva?
