My making meals which were missing key (generally expensive but often just 'forgot to check whether we had them in the house before I started cooking') ingredients became a kind of running joke. One occasion in particular stands out in my mind. We used to regularly make a meal called 'Pork Amandine'. One night, my husband (at that time boyfriend) came home to a new dish called 'pork amandine surprise'. Fancying himself some modern-day Sherlock Holmes he suggested "and the surprise is it hasn't got any almonds in it, right?". I had to confess that this was part of the surprise, yes. The other part of the surprise was that it didn't actually have any pork in it either because I started making it before I checked out the meat situation and so it was more 'pork amandine surprise surprise'. "In fact, 'creamy mushrooms on a bed of rice' would probably be a more fitting name .... except we didn't have any rice either so it's on pasta". I have yet to figure out why he hung around and later became my husband! I guess it must have been for my impeccable good looks, raw animal magnetism and infinite wisdom... Oh and my modesty, of course I have one for you: when I was in college, the guy I was living with and I decided to make a pot pie from scratch. My dad makes the best piecrust ever so I called him for the recipe, "Foolproof Pie Crust," which he got from his mom. A few days later dad called to ask how the crust had turned out, and I had to tell him it was like a piece of brown clay laid on top of the pot pie filling. Absolutely inedible. We had to chip it away to get at the filling. "You're kidding!" he said. "Did you follow the recipe?" "Well, I had to make a few substitutions," says I. "We didn't have any white sugar so I had to use brown. And we didn't have any white flour, so I used whole wheat. And we didn't have any butter so I used olive oil." So when Dad stops laughing, he says, "It's Foolproof, but it's not Damn-Fool Proof."

http://www.kiva.org/lend/365201 Yaseen, 55 years old, is a hard-working man who is supporting a family of nine members including himself. After he retired from the military, Yaseen dedicated all his time to working and enhancing his butcher shop which started around 12 years ago. Now Yaseen want to increase the quantity of meat that he has in his shop so he applied for a loan to buy sheep, then send them to the slaughterhouse and sell the meat. Much as I would like to see Yaseen fully funded, he's almost got three strikes against him - he's a man, the meat hanging next to him isn't particularly attractive and it's a 27 month loan. Can we help him?

This is Ameen, age 31, of Yemen, and the camel that provides the power for Ameen's oil mill. They extract oil from sesame, and other seeds & grains. (I had not previously seen a camel in a loan photo!) http://www.kiva.org/lend/391269
