Disbursed April 7th? This guy has had the loan for five months prior to it even being posted on Kiva! That is a bit extreme IMHO.

Abdou Latifou Sanoussi - this is not from the current batch of expired loans - one of the previous failures.

Wow that is a lot. Two expirations in the previous three years, and then nine this month.... I also hope they don't find out that their particular loan expired. It definitely has nothing to do with them personally, but I imagine it would be hard to think that if you are one of the 11.

just think - if 10% is acceptable - next year at this time there will be 2,000 unfunded loans, so 9 is just a drop in the bucket. Instead of anxiously waiting for credits, people will look forward to their refunds. Perhaps we can have a contest to see who has the most refunds in a year. If you dilengently sort through the loans (always look at the bottom - the unpopular ones) - you might go a year with out actually helping someone, but kiva would have your money most of the time. Add a donation on top of each "loan" , and you will have given Kiva $45.00 dollars in donations, and never connected with a borrower !! This new lending model is sure to attract new lenders and keep 'em comming back to see if anyone ever really gets a loan. Now that's excitement !!

To be fair, when Premal made that comment about "10% defaults/expirations", he said it was a thought that was sometimes floated around the office, and asked for our input on what we thought about it. And he got an earful, too! I never took it as a statement of Kiva's intention, but rather as a starting point for a discussion.
--Diane.
I am in agreement with Diane. This is what I heard also. I think it is rather unfair to take this statement that Premal made and consider that it is something Kiva has made into a goal. Premal never said anything like we want/expect/are trying for a 10% default or loan expiration rate. I think the thing that is being overlooked in this discussion is the real root cause of these expired loans. That is quite simply that Kiva at the moment has too much inventory. Considering that only a few months ago we were living through loan droughts I think Kiva has done a good job of ramping up their inventory, which many of you will recall is something we asked them to do many, many times. When you factor in the US launch in June when Kiva expected to and did see an increase in new lenders joining, I think they have done a GREAT job of keeping up the inventory to accommodate all those new folks. According to Dan's blog post yesterday Kiva posted 5 million dollars in loans every month for the last four months. Let's give them some credit for doing what we asked them to do - provide more inventory - and not get too worried at this point if they have a few too many. The solution? Invite more people to become lenders, then they can help gobble up the "extras". Just my once again. -Kerry-

I whole heartedly agree - inventory management is key to preventing loans from not being funded, but the schizophrenic idea that these are "bad" loans - and the MFI is to blame for this is ludicroius.
So, there are loans unfunded on the site ... what to do ? bury them under all the new loans ?
The fact is and remains that these loans would not go under if the que was managed properly and they were given a top spot.
If Kiva had the intention to meet it's commitment to borrowers and MFI's to fund loans it accepts, then all this disscussion about sort order and bad pictures and too many cows would be moot. They would work to ensure the loans they post get funded. Not blame everybody else except themselves.
It is not as if nobody here has made any effort to help, or made no constructive suggestions, or spent their time and money trying to overcome what is essentially Kiva's self important mission to be "popular".
So, bottom line, are they in the business of letting loans fail to prove their sort order is the bestest in the world ? Or are they in the business of helping the working poor get the capital they need in order to improve their lives ? Not too hard to see where they are on this one.

Has anyone received any response from KIVA about what happened to the loans that expired when there was still an hour left on the clock? I would be interested in a response from KIVA about this issue. Thanks
