Why does everything happen around here on the weekends... specially the weekends I go away from my computer so... I just asked Matt Flannery to be a friend on Facebook... and I sent him a message telling him I was a Kiva Friend and I would appreciate it if he would be nicer to our friend Diane. he already has 499 friends - wow I could actually be number 500, wonder if there's a prize (if he decides to let me in, that is jan

Jan, what awesome luck! 500 is the magic number. He'll do what you ask. This is good news for Diane. Could you ask him for more loans without currency risk for me? John

WOW, I don't know how I missed this thread, and just came across it tonight. To me it is unbelievable how Matt responded to Diane, it seems like he doesn't understand it himself! Hope the walk helped soothe your soul Diane, and that you have rebounded, sorry I wasn't able to post in support sooner. It is also interesting that I come across this thread because something that Matt posted on Twitter some time ago made an impact on me. Back on October 5th Matt tweeted: "Typhoon Ondoy seriously disrupts lending in the Philippines. Over 50% of centers are flooded. Borrower delinquencies to be expected." What has stuck with me about that tweet was that it had no compassion for the entrepreneurs. My opinion of course, but it certainly painted a bigger picture for me. In case you haven't seen Ondoy/Ketsana images: http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2009/09/typhoon_ketsana_ondoy.html

mattflannery: Realizes that people are just as naive in their criticism of kiva as they are in their support of kiva.
I guess I shouldn't be surprise by anything anymore. I find this highly offensive.

I saw that earlier this morning, through his facebook page where his tweets appear also. He has since removed it from both locations.

I think Matt needs to consider either taking some evening courses in Effective Communications or hiring a personal PR agent.

Seems like that is just a sign that indicates to me how Matt perceives Kiva lenders . . . . those of us who put up the funding for the loans that happens to make Kiva work.
Ah, what a joyous compliment [not].
Looks like I need to realize that I'm just naive and therefore not worthy of expressing an opinion along with the rest of you Kiva lenders.

I strongly suspect that Matt's tweet was in response to the recent NY Times commentary and others, and not directly about Kiva lenders (EDIT: especially considering that his next tweet read " I bet a lot of people reading @ssstrom article would conclude that the people on Kiva don't get the loans, which is unfortunate."), but that doesn't excuse the cluelessness and carelessness inherent in the remark as quoted. --Diane.

Finally an honest word...glad to know what Matt thinks of Kiva's supporters. Don't count myself among the naives in their support. I stopped that long time ago. He is becoming a liability to Kiva.
