I thought this was pretty nice...http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_14637970?source=most_viewed.

Students from a Cupertino High in California voted to send all their funds from all four years to help build a school in Kenya.  This is a really nice ending for the students...

is there an attorney in the house?

question:

Social club of 25 "MEN" - it is a male member only club that charges dues (of course I use that term loosely)

is it possible to take this club into some 501c status so that we may start charging for an annual party or any event we hold and the proceeds of that event go to a chairty of our (the clubs) choice

and the club may remain "Men" only?

if anyone has the answer please respond here or message me.

as always, your help is appreciated!!!

Not an attorney but, is that the only reason for seeking 501c status?

If you want to hold a party and require that attendees make a donation to a particular charity, why can't you? Worst case, couldn't you invite a representative of the charity to be the one actually touching the money at the admissions table so that there is no other exchange of the funds?

at present we are not even incorporated ( for 34 years) - reason why is I'm talking somewhere in the tune of $50,000-$75,000 a year in possible money to be donated.  We currently do hold two events and do similar to what you've mentioned.  But that's about $4,000-$5,000.

this is just being proposed to the club, and one person said because we are men only we can't, however, My mother has been a long member of the PEO? PTO? some nationwide club that is "women" only and they are able to do it as far as I know.

PEO International. I think you'll find that they have a work-around. There is the club and there is the PEO Foundation and then there are also the individual projects they support. I'd guess that the club itself is not a charitable organization under tax law and so can restrict membership.

I found this notation online under a section about donating to the PEO Foundation:

Quote
Gifts to local or state chapter funds are not tax-deductible because these entities are not qualified charities.
