Kiva has launched its very first video contest!  We have partnered with Tongal.com to sponsor a $10,000 prize for the winning videos.

Visit our blog to learn more about the contest:

where does the $10,000 come from.

thanx, -jan-

Hi,

the 5 winners of "Phase 1" have been named, and their videos have been published on Tongal's website:

1st place ($3,500) – Erik Andersson, “The Pedro Story”

2nd place ($1,500) – Andre Ferreira, “You Too Can Help”

3rd place ($1,000) – Kieran Ball, “From Desk to Door: Kiva’s Microloan Delivery Service”

4th place ($750) – Shelley Cryan, “Change a Life with a Kiva Loan”

5th place ($500) – Andrew Huffaker, “Kiva – Loans That Change Lives”

All in all, great contributions IMHO, though I think that the jury of Kiva staffers (Gerard, Premal, Matt and Chelsa) were probably a little biased when only awarding 3rd place to former Kiva Fellow Kieran Ball (trying to be particularly "impartial"), and I have to admit that I quite like the contribution by Andrew Huffaker and would have ranked it rather higher than 5th place.

Best wishes,
Wolfgang.

I agree with you Wolfgang that Kieran Ball managed to catch a wave in his contribution that the others did not - and a very useful one at that.

If I was on the jury I guess I would have the problem of to many 1.st prices  Embarrassed Laugh

Be well, Dagfinn A

Indeed, Dagfinn, there is a lot of talent out there... even more so when you are watching the rest of the 52 (I think) contributions on www.tongal.com - like I did.

And - also with phase 2 in mind where the videos with most hits will get rewarded - I decided to list my (very) personal top 10 videos and some more videos that have caught my eye and hope you will enjoy them as much as I did. I decided against ranking them, though - so here goes in no particular order:

Kristin M - Helping Others with Kiva Loans

Benjamin Thomas - A Kiva loan

Joseph Robba - It can literally change someone's life.

David Anderson - Kiva.org - Loans That Change Lives

Tim Riley - The Smart Money

Andrew Huffaker - Kiva – Loans That Change Lives

****

Then, one video that is more of a (greatly made) tutorial (quite befitting the contest title "How to Make a Loan on Kiva"):

Brian Van Den Noortgaete - How To Make A Loan On Kiva

****

And three videos that are not really telling "How To Make A Loan On Kiva" but are great and inspiring ads for Kiva:

Kieran Ball - From Desk to Door: Kiva’s Microloan Delivery Service

Reid MacDonald - Kiva - Helping Entrepreneurs Get Off the Ground

Toni Marano - Kiva: loans that change lives

****

And some more I particularly enjoyed but that didn't make it into my top 10:

Emily Enberg - Teach a Man to Fish

Lewis Gunter - Kivagami

Kathleen Delaney - Kiva - Loans That Change Lives

Massimo Tedeschi - Drops of hope 2

Randy Foreman - How Kiva Works

Andre Ferreira - You Too Can Help

Best wishes,
Wolfgang.

PS:What do you think - should we vote for our winners among the 47 videos that haven't won a prize yet? I'd be prepared to offer a $ 25 GC as a prize.

On the Tongal site there really isn't any way to vote for an entry is there?  Most views is not a vote since you obviously can't consider one properly without viewing it...    It might be good to have a vote here.

Is it just my computer?

because I find these videos really slow to load and they stop periodically while running...

it's probably only 4 or 5 seconds each time... but I find it really annoying to spend 4 minutes watching a 2 minute video ... so I didn't watch many of them when this topic was first posted.

I don't have this problem with youtube or vimeo.
I watched the whole of the Queen's message without any problem at all.

sigh

Jan, they were really slow to load and frustrating for me too.  I was thinking maybe I needed to upgrade my dsl but it sounds like I'm not the only one.  I had to start them so they would begin loading, and then pause them until they were completely loaded, then watch.

Most viewed phase of the contest can be found here .  This runs through Jan. 31, 2010.  It is the amount of times viewed, that is your vote.
