So here goes... after having watched all the entries to the Tongal-Kiva video contest, I think it would be a crying shame if the non-winning contestants didn't (or only barely) get noticed and acknowledged. While there is still a phase 2 where the five videos with the most hits will win further money prizes, this didn't seem to be enough to allow great contributions overlooked / neglected by the jury (and there are quite a number IMHO) a fair chance of recognition (the winners of phase 1 automatically seem to dominate phase 2 as well - because they were featured in the Kiva blog - together with some contributions by people with [I guess] a lot of friends, a blog or something like this).
Thus, I decided - encouraged by David and by Ian who also offered another $25 GC as a prize - to start a competition of our (KF's) own among the runner-up videos.
Here are the - inevitable - rules: 1. The poll will run for 10 days from being posted. Results will only be shown after the poll has expired. 2. Each registered KF member has up to 3 votes, cast simultaneously; it is permissible to only vote for 1 or 2 video(s). Votes cannot be changed. 3. Feel free to solicit votes for "your" top candidates here; discussion (also regarding a comparison with the "official" winners of phase 1 that are not up for vote here) is encouraged. Please show respect regarding all submissions, though. 4. Posting your favourites here and on your blogs / on FB / on Myspace etc. is encouraged to give them some exposure and increase their chances in phase 2 of the competition. 5. a) Should there be a single winning video (= most votes after 10 days), its creator will be awarded two $25 Kiva GCs. b) Should there be two winning videos, their creators will be awarded one $25 Kiva GC each. c) In case of a tie with more than two front-runners, Ian and I will try to agree on two winners. Should this attempt fail, the lot will decide. 6. I will contact the winner(s) [at least] through their Tongal account. Should I not hear back within a month, the respective votes will be voided and the prizes will be awarded again according to #5 a-c.
Have fun voting for and discussing the videos (despite the slow speed of Tongal's website). Best wishes, Wolfgang.

A very good initiative Wolfgang but I think it will not work. The Tongal site is performing so purely that one spend more time waiting for the clips to load than watching them. Besides when loaded they are not able to feed the stream needed so it halts repeatedly making it a poor platform to judge from.
Really a pity as there seems to be some very good work from some . . .
- Be well, Dagfinn A

Not sure if I only have been lucky so far, but I did not have a single time problems while watching some of the videos. Maybe just give it another try.

Mine, too, worked mostly (!) okay though it sometimes took them a bit to load. Maybe their servers are in Germany? In any case, thanks a lot for trying, Dagfinn, and maybe you will return to the videos another day - hoping for less busy servers or a faster connection. Best wishes, Wolfgang.

Hi Wolfgang,
I think this is a really great idea as I know how much time and effort it takes to make one of these! Also, I can't understand why Destin Douglas is currently leading the Most Viewed competition as there are much better entries.
I would like to see James Connolly - How To Make A Loan On Kiva - receive some recognition as I met him whilst I was a Kiva Fellow and he and his wife are great people, always making films about social organisations around the world. I know they worked hard on this and they were the only ones besides me to have actual footage from the field. I know this doesn't automatically imply a good video, but I think they have used the imagery very well (despite an error in the number of field partners which they noticed after submitting).
It will mean a lot to people to get recognition from Kiva Friends.
Thanks, Kieran (From Desk To Door: Kiva's Microloan Delivery Service)

Thank you very much, Kieran, for your encouragement, endorsement of James Connolly's video and for your vote!
And congratulations - both on your (well-deserved) prize and on your video; it stands out (together with a couple of others maybe) from the crowd on the power of its images and story. My only little quibble - which to me then (apart from possible bias of the jurors who maybe wanted to appear impartial too hard) explained why perhaps you "only" came third - was that your video didn't really explain "How To Make A Loan On Kiva" or the Kiva loan process (the same goes for many contributions - like [even more so] those by Reid MacDonald and Toni Marano which I thoroughly enjoyed, too). I will still return to it many times - as I do to "A Fistful of Dollars".
Regarding James Connolly's video, I agree that it is very good and deserves recognition (though I would have ranked it higher without the mistake which curiously another video made, too - not sure, which one, now). Two other videos seem to include footage from the field, though, I believe - Edward Coambs's [which is too long by 10 seconds] and Emily Enberg's.
Now endorsements have started, I am inviting you to look at the contribution by Benjamin Thomas - "A Kiva Loan". I feel that - while not being able to include footage from the field but having to rely on Kiva's limited Media Gallery - he makes very powerful and effective use of the images. And I have to admit that I somehow like Tim Riley's "Smart Money" - I cannot even say why because it certainly is no obvious choice but I find the frame of someone from accounting borrowing $25 for lunch and never paying it back quite compelling. Finally, I feel I shouldn't leave out Kristin M's and Joseph Robba's excellent contributions, here.
One final word (sentence...) regarding phase 2: Views are counted by "unique IPs" so if you (like me) have a more-or-less permanent IP address it wouldn't help your favourite to watch it again and again but only recommending it to friends etc. - it's problematic to say the least IMHO to judge a video's quality by number of hits, and - still acknowledging its quality - I, too, think Destin Douglas's video doesn't really deserve to lead this phase of the competition right now.
Best wishes, and thanks again, Kieran, Wolfgang.

I really liked Benjamin Thomas "A Kiva Loan". Music is very important to me and his choice made me feel very hopeful and determined and carried me along in anticipation of the next scene... I also like his quote from Anne Frank How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world. -jan- after having written to Tongal asking about the slowness of the site.
