Hi there,

I'm starting an event at my university for Kiva, but modeled on DemoCamp. (DemoCamp is a well-known event where local entrepreneurs demo their projects to the community.)
Site: http://www.aidcamp.org/

The idea is to showcase 3-5 Kiva case studies and get people to donate to them, as well as introduce the concept of microloans. At the end, we announce what projects got funding.

PROBLEM: How can I get people to make the actual donations to Kiva at the event?
Ideally, we want them to actually have Kiva accounts that they can log in to, but the main thing is that they make the donation.

Options we're considering:
  • Having 6 computers with wifi and have people register during the break. (Problem: With 100 people, this could take very long and people may not be willing to wait.)
  • We collect checks made out to Kiva or cash, and give people $10 bingo chips in the amount they donate. We then have 5 jars (one for each Kiva entrepreneur) after the showcase, people drop the chips into the jars and we allocate the money accordingly. (Question: Can Kiva accept checks in Canadian dollars, and am I allowed to collect cash on Kiva's behalf if I give them a receipt?)

What options are possible and what would you recommend?

Cyman,

I wish I'd seen this earlier as I'm setting up an event for Kiva now.

Did you find success / answers?  Are you still doing "public outreach" for Kiva?  I'd love to hear what has happened  and what may transpire moving forward! Yahoo!

Cheers,
Dan

Check out gumball capital to see if there is a possible link: http://gumballcapital.org/challenge/home/.

Alternatively, contact Scott at poverty2prosperity.org to see what might work.

Shawn of Global  Agents of change is in Canada: http://www.globalafc.org/Global_Agents_for_Change/Home.html

See what works best for your situation.
