I ended up Messaging the team captain, who is an employee of Intuit, asking her to clarify those questions.  Since I am a QuickBooks ProAdvisor, if I don't get an answer that route I will climb the corporate tree.

Join Intuit's Lending Team and Support Kiva!

As an extension of Intuit’s current Love a Local Business program, for every person who joins the Intuit Kiva Lending Team and makes a Kiva loan within 30 days, Intuit will donate $10 to Kiva.org, up to $50,000. This contribution will be used to strengthen the Kiva micro-lending platform and leverage an estimated $500,000 more in small business loans from Kiva’s Internet community.
To ensure that your loan qualifies for the $10 Intuit donation to Kiva,
1) Join Intuit's Lending Team by clicking here.
2) Make a loan within 30 days of joining and be sure to count it towards the Intuit Lending Team's totals.
3) Also, please note that you can make multiple loans within the 30-day period and each loan will be matched with a $10 donation to Kiva.

Intuit's matching program will run through the end of May 2010, so make your loan today!

I am really sorry to say so, but number 3 is not correct.
This message was posted today to the Intuit lending team message board after several members had asked for clarification:

"Thanks to all of you who have joined our Lending Team! We have received some questions about our Lending Team, so wanted to share the answers here for everyone:
- For each person who joins the Intuit Lending Team and makes a Kiva loan of $25 or more, Intuit will match with a $10 donation to Kiva.
- The donation match is per person, not per loan – our goal is to donate $50,000, so please continue to spread the word to help us reach 5,000 members!
- The actual donations from Intuit will be made each time 1,000 people join the Lending Team, $10,000 at a time.
- We're extending the deadline to build our team to 1,000 to May 31 -- if for some reason we don’t reach 1,000 members before our May 31 deadline, we will still donate the $10 per person."

I will write to Kiva and ask to change their blog entry.

The team has at the moment 313 members what would mean $3130 for Kiva so far. Not sure if we will be able to reach the 5,000, but everyone new member who joins and makes one loan on behalf of the team would be great!

How will they identify whether a person who joined the team made a loan on behalf of the team?

As far as I know, they can tell how many current members the team has (but not how many members have joined the team), and they can identify how many loans have been made on behalf of the team - but they can't identify which members (past and present) have made a loan on behalf of the team.

So, if one member makes two loans, and another member makes no loans, they won't have any way of saying that only $10 (rather than $20) is payable to Kiva.

And just because there are only 315 members (as I write this) does not mean that only $3150 (or some lesser amount) is owed to Kiva - the 392 loans made on behalf of the team could have come from 392 different people and thus $3920 could be due to Kiva.


Someone obviously hasn't thought this through before setting up the challenge.  (Or maybe Kiva is providing them with more info than they are providing to other teams  )


Edit:  It looks like there are several anonymous lenders on the team - how will Intuit identify which anonymous lenders make loans and which ones don't?  Hopefully Kiva won't divulge that info to them, even if they do provide other info!

As far as I know, they can tell how many current members the team has (but not how many members have joined the team), and they can identify how many loans have been made on behalf of the team - but they can't identify which members (past and present) have made a loan on behalf of the team.

I don't know the "how", but since I have dropped out of two teams, I went back to see if those loans in my portfolio are still listed as credited to those teams-- and they are.  So it's in their database, I just don't know how they would extract it.

I  hope Kiva doesnt use money or other recources on extra tracking.

So if you want to give gift sertificates to somebody, and they join the team that counts.

To sort of close the circle on this subject, I just noticed this post from Laura on the Intuit team board, dated June 3, 2010:

Hi team -- at the end of May we had 385 team members who made loans, so Intuit's gift to Kiva will be $3850. We will process it this month and it will arrive in July. Thanks everyone for your partcipation in this challenge.

The total number of members of that team today is 384, with 599 total team loans, so I suspect they just took the number of team members and assumed each had made at least one loan.  Good work, folks!

Actually, not all of their team members made a loan.

But because of the early confusion, there were any number of team members who mistakenly attributed more than one loan to the Intuit team.

So I guess that more than offsets the few members who had none.
