This is a cross-post in solidarity with the virtual lending team - Babies in Hats!  Yes

  The Las Canelas Group

Florentina Mamani, 28, is a member of the Las Canelas communal bank which, in turn, is a member of the Panamericana focal center. She is from the city of El Alto and she tells us that her girlfriends invited her to join Pro Mujer.

She has been a blanket weaver for over 10 years and she plans to use the requested funds to buy raw materials like wool.

The other members of this communal bank are involved in a variety of commercial activities, such as: quinoa sales, blanket braiding, sale of “aguayos” (colorful cloths used to carry babies).

Picaflor bank has had 10 previous loan rounds represented by the same director. Mrs. Olympia is president of the bank. She is married and has 6 children of school age. She sells meals in the Pampa market. Her husband helps her with this business and together they do their best to make a better future for their children. They work hard and earn money to improve their family's quality of life. With the money from the loan she will buy ingredients with which to make her meals and so increase her working capital.

Mrs. Rhina is the treasurer, is married and has two children. She is a confectioner by trade and makes and sells cakes. She is well known in the area for her exquisite cakes. She is very happy and hardworking, always keeping busy. With the money from the loan she will buy ingredients for her cakes and will increase her working capital.

All of the members of the group are from the San Juan Mine region and are characterised by their sensitivity and humility. They have received little education yet they are entrepreneurial people who wish to get ahead in life and this is why they are requesting the loan to improve their businesses. In this way they will best be able to support their families. All of the members are very grateful to the lenders and Kiva for having faith in them and awarding them credit.

Felix Reyes Jaldin, age 22, is married to Melvy Quispe Villarroel. They have two children who are too young to go to school. They currently live in Melvy’s mother’s house.

He works as a mechanic in a shop close to his house. Melvy takes care of their livestock at home. She has worked in milk production for seven years. This is an extra income to support the family. She delivers her production to a business that makes all types of dairy products.

They need the loan to buy a dairy cow in order to increase their production and generate more income. This is the second loan he has requested from Cidre. He previously had a loan, which he paid back in a timely fashion.

Maria

Thirty-year old María lives with her husband and two children, in a rented home, in a community in the mountains of Peru. She has been working on a construction project started by the Peruvian government for a few months while her husband works as a docent in a high school. She has been taking care of a piece of land for eight years. She takes care of the land's needs to make it more productive with its harvests, mostly on the weekends. She starts working very early and doesn't rest. Her and her partner both love farming in spite of the fact that they also have other jobs.

Maria likes her land to be well cultivated and protected from insects even though transporting [the crops] to her city's market is difficult because the sacks of potatoes are heavy. Because she is a hard worker, she wants to plant greater quantities of native potatoes, which are being sought after in the market for their anti-cancerous properties. She would also like to build her own home to provide her family with an adequate quality of life.

This is her fourth loan with MFP and she thanks all of the members of her communal bank, with whom she likes working, because they have allowed her to be part of this honest and hardworking group. Maria plans to use the loan to buy several sacks of fertilizer which will provide adequate maintenance for her potato crops.

Marcelina

Marcelina is 40 years old and a mother to a very happy and hardworking family. She lives in her own home with her husband Felipe (49 years old) and their 6 underage children whom she wishes to give a better quality of life. Throughout these years, Marcelina has worked very hard so that her crops will be of very good quality and every morning with the help of her husband she works the land so that it is more productive. She grows coffee and sells it in the market in the city of “La Merced” since they offer the best prices. She enjoys the harvest and has worked for 3 years, she says that the most difficult thing is transporting her crops to the markets where she sells them. With time she hopes to be able to sow all of her land to be able to increase production.

This is her sixth loan with MFP (Kiva’s field partner) and wants to pay her quotas on time since she wishes to get more loans in the future. She knows that her communal group will support and guide her since she is a very well-liked member. With the 2,500 nuevos soles, she will buy manure to improve the productivity of her small farms.
