Here's an interesting game we can play.  When you View Detailed Stats, you can see the Forum History at the bottom of the page since the beginning of Kiva Friends.  I made a chart of "Kiva Friends New Posts" to get a bird's-eye view of the Monthly Summary of our posting activity.  Sometimes the line goes up, sometimes it goes down.

If we add short quotes to go along with the chart, we can build a Kiva Friends Timeline that pegs certain events with forum history.  Maybe the quotes were related to overall Kiva Friends posting activity, maybe not.  Maybe the quotes were directly related to Kivaish events, maybe not.  What could be more fun than that!!!

Hey guys - I recently started working at Kiva, heading up the Marketing team.

Uh, is this really something that we need to open up again?  I really don't want to go through it again.

I partially agree, Jane. Too much editing (of any type in any situation) by someone other than the writer/speaker/doer is not good. That is censorship, which, in my opinion, is arbitrary, detrimental and oppressive. Censorship by those in power suppresses the freedom (free speech, free expression) of individuals who are not in power.

However, as far as the editing/deleting situation here on KF is concerned, it is my opinion that a person should never be prohibited from editing or deleting his/her own post/posts. (Note: I did not say it is OK to delete an entire thread, only a person's own post/posts.)

I'm with David.   Leave the Band-Aid alone, Richard!   Stop!

It sort of goes without saying that the only reason anyone stayed around here after the events of April was because John appeared on the scene.  Doesn't it?

Unfortunately a band-aid won't fix some wounds.

Sorry David, no it does not go without saying.

If you read the thread in which this was discussed, I think you'll see that the people expressing understanding and support for that change outnumbered those opposing it by roughly 3 or 4 to 1.

In answer to Judy's point, the ability (as original poster) to delete a whole thread was and is inseparable from the ability to delete one's own posts.  That's a feature of the forum software, like it or not.  It's free software, and you get what you pay for.

cheers

David & Nonny,

Kiva has lots of ups and downs.  What people choose to bring up here is their choice.  Weird or not, I actually do find it interesting to see how events relate to each other over time.  Obviously, Kiva Friends activity is not constant, so something has an impact.  Laying out the facts is a critical foundation of any historical discourse.  Whether events are judged good, bad or of no consequence is for each of us to decide.  Whether this topic actually builds a timeline of sorts remains to be seen.  In any event, here it is.  The rest is history...

It seems to me that the numbers indicate that those who remained were outnumbered by those who did not agree with the way those events were handled and left KF.

That may be true, Peter, if one looks only at the number of people expressing opposition in that thread, but that does not mean many, many people were not against what many of us saw as an oppressive power grab. One of the reasons for the lack of opposition is that many people saw no point in trying to fight it. We knew we would not get anywhere. We know there is no recourse here on KF. It is not like we can go to an arbitrator, an appelate court or the Supreme Court when there is a dispute. We are just stuck with unwise, unjust and/or oppressive decisions and have to put up with them or leave KF. That is what some/many people did, leave in one way or another (stopped posting and/or stopped coming to KF). That oppressive decision was, for many people, the last straw or the final nail in the coffin. So please do not think that just because there was not a huge written opposition in that thread that it means there was not opposition. I watched the numbers on KF after that announcement. They dropped considerably. It was not until John arrived on the scene that the number of posts increased, but the actual number of KF who visit KF is lower than it used to be.
