Hello! I'm looking for potential loan recipients with a connection to music -- musicians, instrument makers, people with or trying to start music shops. I write a "world music" column for AOL's Spinner.com and want to encourage readers to make Kiva loans...

You can read the column here:

http://www.spinner.com/category/around-the-world/

Any suggestions? All help or ideas appreciated! If nothing turns up specifically music oriented, I'll find some other way to tie Kiva in to a column, but this seems a natural way to go about it.

thanks!

The most obvious instance of this that I can remember recently is the loan to Ballet Grabas in Chad. They plan to use the funds for new costumes and instruments for their "traditional Chad dancing" performances.

I'll keep my eyes open for any loans that might possibly fit your needs. Be aware, though, that loans for "unusual" and artistic purposes like these often fund very fast, so posting about it here might not be fast enough for you to participate if that's what you'd like to do. (And they certainly wouldn't be likely to be open long enough for readers of your column to participate! BUT you might want to collect some currently-funded loans like these to highlight as examples of some of the types of loans Kiva.org does fund.) If I recall correctly, the Ballet Grabas loan was funded in just a few short hours. There are regular loans to entrepreneurs starting or expanding CD shops, but that probably isn't what you're looking to highlight.

In any event.... welcome to Kiva.org and kivafriends! Smiley

Diane, thanks so much! the Ballet Grabas is a perfect example I can use... but even CD shops would be fitting for this... it may not even be a case of suggesting specific ones for my readers, but let readers know there are things at Kiva that would be fitting...

best,

Steve

Hi sochman,

What a great idea!  Tongue

If you go to the Kiva Lend page and search "All" businesses for something like "music", you'll see a good sampling of what you can expect for future loans "In Need."  Even a loan for pigs can have a music connection.  Kiva stories like that certainly can make an interesting sidebar at the very least.  Smiley

Smiley Hi - Here are a couple more (I also loaned to the ballet - I look for music-oriented ones too, as I have various musicians in my family and like to support others):

The first is a Roma man from Bulgaria who took a loan in order to be part of a musical group on a cruise ship:

The second is a Cambodian man (the loan actually was for his wife for agricultural work) who is both a farmer and a traditional musician:

Good luck - and if you notice any music loans let the rest of us know too.  We'll try to keep you informed.

Following are two of my music-related investments,
AKA (also known as)

two of the reasons why I (came to) LOVE KIVA:

A sax-playing, former member of the Bulgarian National Orchestra who loves Louis Armstrong.

A singing tamale maker.
