Elguja Okrochelidze a beekeeper from Georgia

Elguja Okrochelidze lives in Imereti Region, village Persati. He is 50 years old and lives with his wife. The only source of income of the family comes from agricultural activities: they own five milk cows and produce cheese, which is sold on the local market. They also grow strawberries on a 300 sq meter plot of land. They harvest on average 100 kg of strawberries per year and sell them on the local market.

The family also runs a bee-keeping business: they own 35 bee-hives and bee colonies. 300 liters of honey are gathered and sold annually. With the requested amount Elguja will purchase the following items: parts for bee-hives frames, equipment for production of beeswax, and some joiner’s (carpentry) equipment.

Due to this investment, Elguja will be able to reduce his production costs for the wax plates by 30% and the cost of production of the bee-colonies by 50%. This will positively influence family income. With the increased income Elguja will purchase additional bee-colonies and expand the family’s business.

"Our daughters can contribute just as much to society as our sons, and our common prosperity will be advanced by allowing all humanity - men and women - to reach their full potential. I do not believe that women must make the same choices as men in order to be equal, and I respect those women who choose to live their lives in traditional roles. But it should be their choice. That is why the United States will partner with any Muslim-majority country to support expanded literacy for girls, and to help young women pursue employment through micro-financing that helps people live their dreams." - President Barack Obama, June 4, 2009

Eleonora Chachua lives in Samtredia District, in the village of Dabla Gomi. She is 56 years old and lives with her husband, two sons, and her daughter-in-law. A couple of weeks ago, she became a grandmother and now they have an infant boy in the home.

Eleonora’s sons are in military service. Eleonora and her husband are heading the family agricultural business: a small dairy farm, which consists of four milk cows. The end-product – 20 kg of traditional Georgian cheese is sold on the market. They also have a plot of the land where maize is grown. From the harvested 6 tons of maize only 600 kg is sold and the rest is used in the farm. Also the family owns a lemon garden, which gives them 500 kg of lemon per year. These are sold locally. Along the above-mentioned, Eleonora had 30 bee-hives with bee colonies. 24 colonies were destroyed because of unfavorable weather conditions last year. Now only six bee colonies are left.

The requested credit will be used for further development of their farm, in particular – 50% of the credit will be used for purchasing 10 new bee colonies. The rest will be used for cultivation of the land and purchasing 250 chickens. The chickens will be sold in a couple of months at double the price.

After this investment the income of the family will significantly increase. Eleonora hopes that they will be able to put aside some savings and purchase a car for the family

She is also engaged in beekeeping and has thirty beehives. Her husband doesn’t work, so she wants to increase the number of beehives to get more income. With the requested loan she plans to purchase more beehives in order to get more income from selling honey. This will let Zemfira develop her beekeeping business and improve her living conditions.

Jose resides in Delicias de Concepción, department of Morazán, where he lives with his wife and 21 year old son. He dedicates himself to apiculture, which is the management of bees in their beehives. He has been carrying out this work for 30 years; his son also helps manage the apiary.

He is requesting a loan to purchase materials to build the beehives, such as frames, bottoms, lids, and boxes. This investment will help him expand the apiary, and with all these materials complete his income will increase given that he will be able to count on an improved production.

His dream is to have an apiary of 60, which has the capacity to hold up to 200 beehives.

Jose, in Peru, raises sheep and goats, and keeps bees for honey production.  He is using his Kiva loan to renovate the boxes that contain his bee hives.
