Another new MFI, this one in Ecuador!

Fundacion Alternativa

Quote
Fundación Alternativa is an Ecuadorian nonprofit organization, founded May 27, 1991, with the purpose of propelling entrepreneurship and providing sustainable financial and non-financial services to satisfy social, economic, and land development with the goal of improving the quality of life for vulnerable people, their families, and communities.  To achieve this, Fundación Alternativa has developed various strategies that are intimately connected: Microfinance, Education and Training and Continuing, Technical Assistance, Boosting and Strengthening Chains of Production, and Local Economic Development. Since 1991, Fundación Alternativa has promoted strengthening the microfinance industry through the creation of the first bank specializing in microfinance in Ecuador, and then through the creation of the first training center specializing in the transfer of microcredit methodology. The microcredit program is 10 years old and has 12 microcredit products.  Our products reach the urban, rural and marginalized sectors of the provinces of Pichincha, Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, Cotopaxi  and Imbabura. We are proud to share some of our social indicators as of December 2010. Percentage of women clients -62% ; rural clients – 56%. Financial inclusion: our social impact rating has signaled that the Fundación makes important efforts to reach the poor and excluded populations in Ecuador.

The first loan is already funded, but I hear that more should be coming!

"Profitability" is negative 295%.  What's up with that?

That doesn't seem quite right to me either.  Checking back with the Partnerships team - thanks for the heads up!

the Mixmarket data for Fundacion Alternativa shows some chunky donations.   $404,000 in 2010, and $132,000 in 2009.  See http://www.mixmarket.org/mfi/fundaci%C3%B3n-alternativa/data/income-statements - penultimate numbers in the 2009 and 2010 columns.  At the operating level though, they appear to be OK, $399,000 net operating profit in 2010.  I suspect there have been some capacity-building costs in the past couple of years, covered by donations, and this has distorted the ratios.

I tried (briefly..) and failed to discover who the donors were.  Google hints at USAID and The Rockefeller Foundation.

Kiva Fellow Kate Bennett recently wrote about the path Fundacion Alternativa had to take to become a new Kiva field partner:

Good points, Peter!  And great idea to look on Mix Market.  The 2009 ROA for the MFI is listed on MixMarket as 2.96%:
http://www.mixmarket.org/mfi/fundaci%C3%B3n-alternativa/data

I've emailed the team to see if the discrepancy is due to an error with the percentage (2.96% versus 296% seems like an error at first blush).  Will let you guys know as soon as I hear!

Confirmed that it's an error.  It should be fixed within the next hour or so!
