Hi everybody,

I was looking on Alexa.com (which collects website traffic stats, and it says the average visitor to Kiva views 4-5 pages. This only exposes a handful of borrowers (at most) to the average visitor, but of course this includes all visitors, not just those who end up making a loan. So I was wondering if there were any data on how many pages the average lender views before lending. (John kindly suggested I post a thread about this, thanks John!)

So, to those (Kiva staff or other data collectors!) who may have the data: Do you know how many pages on the site, on average, lenders view before they make a loan?

And perhaps, for others, even if you don’t know the data, how many pages do YOU usually view before making a loan?

Given the size of the pool, my guess would be that most people don't go through all 35 or so pages of listings available (sometimes more)! And perhaps they click on even fewer individual profiles before they finally lend. Moreover, people sort so they can get even smaller lists to start with.
I’m sure the most passionate lenders among you may view quite a few profiles! But if not a lot of people do that, I’m wondering what this implies for the exposure of each loan in the middle of such a long listing. Though there may be enough variety of sorting behavior going on (go Late Loaning Lenders!).

Best,
Pierre

When making a loan: Zero.  (I use KivaLens to determine which loans to make, and thus go straight to checkout.)

When not making a loan I often look at lots of (non-loan) pages, such as statistics, and team pages, and lender pages, etc, etc.

Are page views resulting in a loan able to be separated from page views which don't result in a loan?

I probably view pages every day, but I don't make a loan every day.

I changed my bookmark settings to show 80 loans to a page.  Does that mean I will have lesser "page views?"  Depending on my sort selection I will only typically go to 2 or 3 pages of lists.

Sometimes I open loan pages in new tabs so I can click back and forth between the list and possible loans.  Sometimes I go to the loan pages and then use the back button to get back to the list before going to another loan page.  These methods with produce differing page view counts (I would think).

Sometimes I will browse slowly through many loans AFTER I have my chosen loan in my basket.

(Just some thoughts to increase the complexity of the question)  Grin

FWIW Pierre, when I get up in the morning and go to the Kiva site (I'm US East Coast), I normally select 'recent loans' from the drop-down box on the homepage and view the first two or three pages of loans (I figure that any really cool loans beyond the first two or three pages will already have been funded by my fellow Kiva lenders in Australia and Europe while I was sleeping!)  When we are mid month and I still have credit to re-lend, I continue to watch the 'recent loans' throughout the day in case anything interesting pops up.

I tend to opt for short-term loans, so I will sort by "Repayment Term" and review only the first two pages of results.  If there's a particular country or region that I'm looking for to diversify my list of active loans, then I will also utilize the "region" sort or type the name of a specific country in the search box.

Thank you all for your thoughts! To clarify based on Dan's points, I meant views before actually making a loan. However, of course, yes the question can be a bit more complicated, given that perhaps you will view 5 pages today but decide to make no loans, then two days later come back, view 2 pages and pick right away. I am especially curious about the latter, i.e. how many pages one views before actually making the loan. But it is a good point that one cannot distinguish between the two that easily!

I'd be surprised if Kiva didn't follow patterns of page views, etc. Whatever count JohnAtKiva could come up with would be very interesting! I wonder if the numbers Kiva has differ from the Alexa.com broad count of page views.
