hi all
I was recently fortunate to be able to visit Guayaquil on business. I enjoy visiting the cities where I might have a kiva loan, or countries where Kiva is active. I am not necessarily interested in meeting borrowers, or tracking down MFI's (suppress MIFEX comments here), but rather just get a feel for the people and the city.
The people are very friendly, and though in some sections of the city crime is a problem, everywhere I went I felt safe and welcome.
Guayaquil is in a bit of a resurgence, and has done a lot to re-invent parts of the city and breathe new life into the river front (Malecon 2000) and the Las Penas neighborhood. For those going to the Galapagos, this is the jumping off point. Not quite as quaint as Quito, but anyone could spend a few sunny days exploring the flavors and colors of the city.
There are some Kiva fellow write ups on Guayaquil and always wikipedia for those who want more info.
Here is a link to some pictures, starting with Iguana Park, the washing of the turtle, the Cathedral, a furniture show at the crystal place (built by Eiffel), Malecon 2000 (The riverfront), with an art show of artist painting as well as outdoor gallery (for the 9th October festival), Las Penas and the 444 steps to the top. And of course some Delicious food.
