      Woolloomooloo
Woolloomooloo may be even more fun to play with than Espoo, Espoo.
http://www.kiva.org/lender/andrew2679

Essential Facts About Woolloomooloo That One Simply Cannot Live Without:

1) ".... Woolloomooloo is home to the Finger Wharf building  (which) is,
according to the Guinness Book of World Records,
the largest wooden structure in the world...."

2) "... In 1970, Australian educator, journalist and politician Irina Dunn created the paraphrase
'A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle,'
scribbling the phrase on two bathroom doors:
one at Sydney University where she was then a student,
and the other at Soren's Wine Bar in Woolloomooloo..."

3)  The brilliant, to some of us, super attractive & sexy actor, ---------, ***
lives in a $14 million penthouse in the wharf.

***   You didn't think that
                                           I was going to
                                           do all the work,
                                           did you?

Jill -

3) R..... C......

maybe in 2) you want to revisit "paraphrase"? paraphrase catchphrase

 Grin

Guinness picked up on the woman/man/fish/bicycle paradox in one of their ad campaigns, which brings to mind maybe the best ever bit of radical feminist graffiti.   Fiat did a poster campaign in the 70's I think for which the strap-line was something like "if this car was a woman, you'd pinch her bottom", under which some anonymous genius scrawled, "if this woman was a car, she'd run you over"

When I was, just now, scoping out the most recently added members on Team Tia, I discovered there was one from a place called Blackbutt, a name which absolutely delighted me because, well, that’s just how I am.  Whenever I see a funny or unusual place name like that, I usually imagine how fun it would be to be able to write its name as a return address or to be able to answer something like, “Why, Blackbutt, of course!” when someone asked me where I was from.

Blackbutt turns out to be the southern suburb of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, boosting, close by, as one of its main attractions the cleverly named, Blackbutt Reserves, which, according to Wikipedia, is “… a large bushland reserve which includes wildlife sanctuary for koalas, kangaroos, emus, wombats, native birds, etc.”  Sounds like a fun place to check out.

So, yes, with that, I am absolutely unapologetically, shamelessly resurrecting this thread, because I believe now, as I believed when I first started it, that there’s all kinds of learning and fun to be had and shared here, coming simply, from the names of the places where Kiva’s lenders and entrepreneurs come from, and from the things we can learn about them, once we've gotten past chuckling, guffawing, or shaking our heads over their names.

EDITWas just thinking....   It would have been even more fun, as in, a whole lot more fun, if instead of their naming the place, Blackbutt, the Aussies had named it, "Bigbutt," instead.  On the other hand, I suppose there's a reason why I haven't been appointed, yet, as the official Place Namer of the World.
And yes, it's very possible, as you might conclude, particularly if you read through the first couple of pages of this thread as I just did, that my "sense of humor" is something of an acquired taste.  Sorry.  Not.

Hm. . . I'm wondering if Big Foot has ever visited Bigbutt.  Oops!!! I meant Blackbutt.  Roll Eyes

How about St Louis du Ha! Ha!

The official town website notes that they are the only municipality in the world with two exclamation points in the name.

(Can anyone name any town with one exclamation point in the name?)

The English town of Westward Ho! in the United Kingdom.  Perhaps Big Foot visited there too.

Ha! Ha!

Which calls to mind the town of Studley Roger in England. Surely as splendid a name as the location.
