I've been asked (not-so politely) to introduce myself.  So here it is.

I'm a techie, and started lending to Kiva in April '07.  So far, I've made 27 loans, most of them to entrepreneurs in the former Soviet Union.  I've also made a few loans to Iraq, as I feel it's important to encourage small businesses there to help rebuild their country.

I like lending to Kiva for two reasons.  First, many of these countries are poor, and building businesses there will help improve their economy and the standard of living there.  That includes everything from food and agriculture, to basic services, to some luxuries.  This is how many countries around the world have built themselves up (including the U.S.)  Nothing is better than seeing the loan repaid, because that means the loan recipient was able to use the money to improve their life, and the lives of those around them.

Second, I like playing "venture capitalist" - I read all the business plans, and lend to those that seem like a good idea.  So far I've had pretty good luck with it - the only late payment I've had was one to Kenya.  And to be honest, it's fun.  Smiley

Well, nobodynowhere, I hope you will forgive us for any lack of civility to you, thank you for posting and  Welcome to Kiva Friends!

We all share your enthusiasm for lending, and we are always glad to have new people to share their stories and enthusiasm for Kiva.  it can be very fun here too, by the way.

That is why the United States will partner with any Muslim-majority country to support expanded literacy for girls, and to help young women pursue employment through micro-financing that helps people live their dreams." - President Barack Obama, June 4, 2009

I read with interest that you seem to have an eye on the needs in the CIS geographies - I share that and trust you will find a lot of projects to fund - velkommen Nobodynowhere

I guess it's time to stop lurking.  My name is Laure & I'm new to Kiva - only a month or so.  I like the idea of giving people a hand up and I have to admit I may well be a Kiva-addict in the making.  The rest of my life is kids & work, work & kids...

If you are going to be an addict, you will have many friends here!  In fact, Kivafriends (KF) is a pretty handy place to hang out when you are trying to avoid lending too much  Roll Eyes ...but just want to talk about how great Kiva and microlending is!

Hat Wave hello fellow Canadian Laure Smiley

KivaNut is another term you will hear (have you met Lynn yet?) - it's a great addiction to be burdened with and as a KivaFriend I have learned so much about this world we live in - jump right in! Thumbs Up

- and kids are terrific fun! (coming from a Grandma who has passed on all responsibilities Smiley

- and work - well that's a privilege we are fortunate to tap into in this great country of ours!

As a KivaNut we have the chance to help others improve their lives - to create work and the opportunity to feed and clothe their kids.
