Kiva Friends began in March 2007 as an offshoot of the Kiva Yahoo Group. It is run independently of Kiva by Joe, who donates time to code, maintain and help moderate the discussion forum along with DianeCharlie (who is also a moderator).

Kiva supports Kiva Friends. Staff members read and participate in discussions. Kate made our logo to match the same font Kiva uses and a link to Kiva Friends can be found at the Kiva site at: http://www.kiva.org/about/community/ and, as of November 2007, in many other areas of the Kiva site as they are now encouraging members to search Kiva Friends and/or post questions to reduce the load of common support messages.

Kivapedia (kivapedia.org) is also a part of Kiva Friends. It was launched in June 2007. This Kiva information wiki is run independently of Kiva by Joe and maintained by many forum users here, including RichardF who suggested the wiki and did a lot to get it going.

The Kiva Toolbar for Firefox and Internet Explorer is also part of Kiva Friends. It was created in August 2007 by Joe and is run independently of Kiva. This toolbar is a free browser extension for Windows and most Mac users, with links to all Kiva related web sites and features.
