FREE (SUPERLATIVE, AWE-INSPIRING, HOPE-AND-LOVE-GENERATING) BOOK TO THE FIRST TEN (10) PEOPLE WHO REQUEST ONE.

Last night, I went with a friend to listen to a talk by Greg Mortenson,
the co-author and subject of a book called "3 Cups of Tea; One Man's Mission to Promote Peace... One School at a Time."
I had fallen in love with the book over a year ago when I first read it
(and bought Idon'tknowhowmanycopies of the hardback to give away).

As amazing as the book was, the real guy, in person, was even more amazing,
beyondwonderful in his humility, his "realness",
his love for and commitment to the young girls in Pakistan and Afghanistan
for whom he's been building schools and to whom he's been devoting his life for more than the past decade,  just incredible.

You must know, through my thread, Kiva Friends and the Books They Love,
http://www.kivafriends.org/index.php/topic,966.0.html
and various posts of mine on other threads that I absolutely love reading
and apparently also have this stronger-than-out-of-control compulsion to share --
to share things of beauty, things of fascination or wonder, all kinds of things.

            That said, Here's the Deal:

I just ordered ten paperback copies of this book (because I loved it and because I can).
If any of you are interested in reading it, I will be happy to mail it to you (to the first ten who PM me), free of charge,

the only "strings" being:
    a) That You Will Agree to Read at Least the First 50 Pages of It
     b) If you finish it, You will agree to Post something about your impressions of it
          here at the Forum

For KivaFriends not living in the U.S. (Peter, Oli, Christopher, and Robert come to mind, among others),
because the costs of shipping the book to you would probably be pretty high,
if you decide you want to be among my ten,
my deal to you would be that you try to order it where you are,
and if you read it and it turns out you aren't totally totally excited and satisfied,
I'll wing you a $25 Kiva Gift Certificate to use,
so absolutely sure am I of the pleasure and exaltation of this book.

If any of you decide to take me up on this and feel uncomfortable about me having your address,
give me your work address or your next door neighbor's address or some relative's address; I don't care.

        Also, yes, Welcome Back, Glenda.
I saw your name here a couple of evenings ago and was very glad to see that you were back and Safe.

EDIT -- Morning of September 30th:
Greg Mortenson's Speaking Schedule for Remainder of 2007 and Beginning of 2008:
     http://www.threecupsoftea.com/BookTour2007.php
     http://www.threecupsoftea.com/BookTour2008.php

I am SO CERTAIN of the richness and power and inspiration of both the man and his book that
I can come as close to promising you as I can promise anything
that if you read this book and go to hear him speak,
and even better yet, encourage someone(s) you care about to do the same,
it will be one of the more precious gifts you will have given yourself (and hopefully, to someone else, too),
in a very very long time.

And no, Peter, I wasn't in advertising, before.
I just love what I love.

Gee, I looked this up on Amazon, and apparently it was on the NY Times bestseller list at least 23 weeks, and it got hundreds of rave reviews from readers! I can't wait to read it!

Hey Jill, did you have a previous existence in advertising?  Tongue

But anyway, I'm convinced (the reviews at Amazon .com and .uk suggest you're not exaggerating..) and I've just ordered from Amazon.uk.  Being a tightfisted old geezer, I bought another book to qualify for free delivery, so I'll have you to thank also for finally getting round to reading Banker To The Poor.

I doubt very much that I will be claiming that $25 Kiva Gift Certificate!

Hi!

I just made my first loan and found kivafriends today.  Any mention of books gets my attention so this is the first thread I opened!  I'm in a lull right now with books so the recommendations are coming at a great time!

I'll share some of my favorites...ANYTHING by Barbara Kingsolver but especially The Bean Trees and Poisonwood Bible - every word in her books is there on purpose; The Big Stone Gap series by Adrienne Triganini (but I didn't really like her other books); Garden Spells was a really whimsical, engaging, quick read; Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier;  Oh...and I love Ann Patchett's books.  And a million more but these are the ones that popped up right away!

Valerie, jumping in!

OK, Valerie, you've inspired me.

Long-time Guest and newly minted member making her initial foray into the world of posting ...

Picking a favorite book(s) is somewhere up there (down there?) with picking my favorite cat(s) - I just can't fathom a world where such a thing would be possible  Grin

Avid Tolkien, Dostoyevsky, and Tufte fan.  Currently checked out from the library - book on balance (as in your vestibular organ), biography of Louisa Mae Alcott, and study on the emotional context of the Ancient Greek Theater.

Recommended books it seems no one has heard of: The Company They Keep (Glyer) and Civilization and the Limpet (Wells)

And I didn't see anyone else linking to their Library Thing collection ... so going out on a limb here ...   But a subset of my collection is cataloged at  http://www.librarything.com/catalog.php?view=Majella.    A personal endeavor that has been sorely neglected since I discovered Kiva.

Welcome, Ramona!  What a nice place to drop your first post, on the books thread!  Cheesy

A Tufte fan, eh?  Just this week I ordered a copy of "Beautiful Evidence" as a Christmas gift for my oldest son.  (I have a set of Tufte's first three books which I got signed at one of his talks... which are fabulous, if you get a chance to go see one.)  Not only is the material impressive, but the quality of the books themselves is superb. (As might be assumed given he self-publishes and is a perfectionist.)  Did you know he's also a sculptor (among other talents)?

Again, welcome.  I'm not even going to go visit the Library Thing site right now, I don't need another time sink, LOL!  But I'll keep it on the list for that eventual lull that I know must be out there somewhere....

Good to read on peoples interest in books. I usually like to read novels that adress refugee issues and the problems they encounter.
One of my favorite authors is Kader Abdolah, an iranian scholar, who fled the country to the Netherlands when he was about 40 yrs old, learned our language and now writes novels in Dutch! Amazing. His books deal with refugee issues, the history of Iran and it's effect on locals, so he has written family saga's (is that a word in english?). His best book is 'het huis van de moskee" or the house of the mosque. don't know if there is an english translation, but if you can find it: A MUST READ! Much better than the books of Khaled Hosseini. He also wrote 'spijkerschrift' which i think is translated in english as 'my fathers notebook'. Also excellent.
Will try ' three cups of tea after the very 'agressive' advertising campaign on this site Laugh....

Good morning Simone and yes...saga is an English word...meaning an ongoing story in this case....covering several generations of family....and welcome!!
