Disaster Relief Fund

Disaster Relief Fund is a lending group meant to rebuild lives which are affected by earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, and typhoons.  There have been a number of natural disasters lately, and there is a need to make a difference in the lives of those who have lost so much. By lending money to entrepreneurs in the areas of recent natural disasters, Kiva borrowers can help restart the economic engine for families and the region.  These businesses can provide jobs as well as a purchase point for basic needs such as food, clothing and construction materials.

By giving a Kiva gift certificate, you are assured that your donation will help the world’s poor recover from natural disasters quicker and in a self-determined way.  On your behalf, loans will be made, and all repaid loans will be lent to new disaster victims.

Current disasters this might cover include:

1.   Peru from the earthquake
2.   Mexico from Hurricane Dean (selected areas of Mexico, including Yucatan)
3.   Haiti from Hurricane Dean
4.   Dominican Republic from Hurricane Dean
5.   Countries affected by Hurricane Felix (still to be determined)

Preference will be given to established partners with more stars.  Generally four or five stars, but three stars will be considered if there are no other partners in the region.  A region will be considered for loans for at least a year after the disaster, depending on funds available to lend, Kiva loans available at the time, and what the needs are around the world.  Generally, $25 will be the amount contributed for each loan.

To support this endeavor, Kiva gift certificates can be sent to DisasterReliefFund@yahoo.com.  You can make a difference!

Colette,

I really like your idea. It's a great way of "coordinating" help efforts from Kivafriends. As we've seen with the Mark Agwonah Fund, we can achieve so much together!

Oli and Jill,

Thank you for your kind words.  Please feel free to spread the word about this.

It seems Nicaragua and Honduras will be the ones hit by Hurricane Felix.  If someone wishes to designate a country for their donation (to an affected country), reasonable efforts will be made to accommodate this for the original loan.

Have you heard anything about how hard hit were the areas where Kiva businesses are located?

I have at least two overdue loans from entrepreneurs in Choluteca, Honduras.  I am hoping they're OK....

Diane,

I haven't heard specifics.  It could be power issues (difficult to access computers) or transportation (roads messed up).  It could be the building that the partner uses has limited access.

How overdue are the loans?  Were they regular before?

Maybe you will hear soon...please post if you hear something!!!

I found a write-up on Prisma's Nicaraguan and Honduran offices faring reasonably well through Felix, on Dr. Kendall Mau's blog:

I finally heard from Honduras (9/8/07).  No heavy damage suffered, just some flooding.  All employees okay.  Electricity was off and on.   They will try to start listing some new projects on Kiva next week when everything gets back to normal.

I am hoping this assessment applies to the entrepreneurs as well....

Diane,

I imagine that they won't know for awhile how individual borrowers fared during the hurricane.  One step at a time, and we will find a Nicaraguan loan for Disaster Relief Fund, yet!

With a major earthquake, aftershocks, and tsunami in the Pacific today, you may get more business than you expected!

Kivafriends.org scrambled and respelled is "Risk And Forgive."  Of course, it also can be respelled "Asked For Virgin" and "Darer of Vikings" and even "Vinegar For Kids" but those are a lot less interesting.

Michael,

Hmmm, I wasn't hoping for more disasters!!!

Right now I have donations marked for Nicaragua as the donors want it to go there.  They perceive that this is the area most affected.  Prisma, the local partner, seems to have gotten away with no major damage.  Apparently, they expect to back on-line with loans in a week or so.  I gather power has been inconsistent.

If anyone has more credits than they can spend easily under the $25 current daily cap, you can donate one.  Initial loan can be designated to any of the areas affected by recent disasters : Peru, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Haiti and Nicaragua.  Mexico or Peru will probably be easiest to catch, though.  I have more than one loan for Nicaragua...just waiting for something to show up!

Well, Colette,

it seems the disaster we all have NOT been waiting for has arrived: I am shocked by the news from central Africa. Quite some of the Kiva countries are affected, most severely Uganda, but also Ghana and Senegal, Togo, Nigeria and Kenya.

My heart reaches out to the hundreds of thousands of affected.

Check out the BBC from today.

Oli and Henry,

I agree that parts of Africa can be considered disaster areas.  Current areas considered are:

1.   Peru from the earthquake
2.   Mexico from Hurricane Dean (selected areas of Mexico, including Yucatan)
3.   Haiti from Hurricane Dean
4.   Dominican Republic from Hurricane Dean
5.   Countries affected by Hurricane Felix--Honduras and Nicaragua
6.   Parts of Africa--see maps by Henry.  Note that partner ideally is a 4 or 5 star, and mustn't be lower than 3 stars.  A good payment record and longevity should be considered.

The fund allows individuals to select the first loan location.  All current donations are allocated to specific areas.  If your heart strings are pulled by a disaster or a part of the world, your donation can be designated as above.
