Hey all--
I wanted to tell you a bit about ASSET (Achieving Sustainable Social Equality through Technology) for girls was started by my cousin, Nita in August 2006. She is pursuing a PhD in Marketing Strategy at UT-Austin.

Because her write-up is better, I thought I would post it directly.

*ASSET's mission is to educate children of women in prostitution and girls rescued from trafficking for prostitution in major cities in India by providing computer literacy for alternate livelihood and as a means of AIDS prevention so that they can free themselves from being chained to the flesh trade.*

Key differentiators: ASSET is focused on outcomes and not output. We will measure number of students placed in internships/jobs and not number of centers and enrolled students.

Our centers in Chennai, Kolkata and Delhi (2) are already operating and the centers in  Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad will start shortly.

ASSET India Foundation provides 10 new Dell PCs, APTECH-VIDYA -IT curriculum and textbooks and training of instructors free of cost. ASSET also pays the salaries of the IT and English language instructors at some of the centers.

ASSET has obtained approval from Microsoft for free software licenses and their Unlimited Potential program for all the ASSET centers.

In addition, QUEST Foundation has offered the GE Life Skills modules to our students in various cities.

Hey rakeshg,
     Welcome, and thanks for posting.
Your cousin's program sounds very special.
Reading about it brought to mind the superlative DVD documentary, Born Into Brothels,
about probably, some of those very same kids,
these.... who were given cameras
to try to record and capture the stories of their lives.
There was a beautiful book published of the incredible photographs they took.

    Having seen that show,
I have a very clear picture in my mind
of the indescribably beautiful kids
I think your cousin is trying to help.
I wish her.... and her program.... the best.
