I have bought quite a few gift certificates, and I can attest to the idea that setting an "expiry date" for the offer is very important, as are reminder emails (eg 14 days, 7 days etc)
When someone does redeem the certificate, their name appears next to it. If you find that you have no one else to offer it to (which is unlikely... there are 6 billion people in the world!), you can redeem the certificate yourself and loan it. Or even donate to Kiva!

Perez Hilton and the other really popular blogs seem like they might be a really fruitful idea -- if they make a post or add a link, their readers are only a click away from Kiva, unlike people who are reading about it in a magazine or watching TV (though, as we learned when Frontline aired, TV viewers are pretty quick to pull out their laptops). Technorati has a list of some of the most popular blogs: http://technorati.com/pop/blogs/

I would think Angelina Jolie would be ideal. She has children from around the world, and she does charity internationally as well. I know I chose someone from Nicaragua as that is a part of my son's heritage...

I stuck with local celebs and the pastor I gifted has talked about Kiva during his Sunday message to about 1000 people, the broadcaster invested the gift and didn't take other action, a union leader I sent a $25 GC is taking the Kiva story to his membership, a local bookstore owner was so surprised by the GC that he is now including Kiva book marks with each purchase.

Wonderful, Optimistic Bob! Think I'll switch to locals too. I tried Oprah and couldn't figure out how to get anything to her. Made a suggestion on Barack Obama's web page that it would be good PR for him to join. There was no way I could figure to send him a gift certificate without it being a political contribution, and I didn't think that would be seemly. Got a nice (but neutral) response from the staff thanking me for making a suggestion, but I'd be extremely surprised to hear that Barack himself ever got the message.

My response from Celebs hasn't been that great. But I am also having problems getting some of my FRIENDS to use the certificates, so I shouldn't be surprised. But its been worth it, the friends I have gotten involved are very happy with KIVA.
Glenda, I thought about sending gift certificates to Obama's kids, but I wasn't sure that was the route either. I didn't get a chance to meet him last time he was in town (I was in San Francisco), but I might in the near future, but I"m thinking I won't get the chance to slip him one and talk about KIVA. Still scheming...
I've been active at Obama meetings, and always talk about KIVA (as well as bring literature), and have gotten a lot of Obama supporters to be lenders too.

I get up in the morning determined to both change the world and to have one hell of a good time. Sometimes, this makes planning the day difficult.

Would anyone like to post a sample cover letter you're sending along with Gift Certificates? I've got some ideas locally but would be interested in seeing how others are introducing the concept when sending the certificates.
Also: if you plan to give them a certain time period before you reclaim the GCs.... how do you reclaim them? Just print another certificate and give it to someone else, and hope Recipient #1 doesn't go back later and try to use it after Recipient #2 has already used it?

I thought I would get online this a.m. and try to post something on the Oprah site. I have spent several hours setting up etc and cannot even find my own post on Oprah's site O Groups. I think it needs one of you more experienced site travellers to do it. This is the first site I have ever been on so don't have skills. I will try to check Oprah's site again and see if it is there however maybe one of you could check for me. I posted as chickman48.
My new passion is giving gift certificates for birthdays and gifts for dinners, instead of flowers etc to old friends. I have given out 5 in the last month 3 have been redeemed. I am going to add a blurb to get the info on who they donated to so that I can track them. I don't know if it is appropriate to ask them who they donated to. Just curious.
