Just curious if there are other gay and lesbian folks and couples actively lending on Kiva... would love to chat in here.

Mark and I have been together for 15+ years, and live in Northern California.  We saw Kiva on Oprah, and were thrilled to finally have a way to get into microlending - we've followed the idea in the news for a couple years and have always wanted to try it.

So I took my iPod money and put it into Kiva instead (sorry, Steve - next time!), though it took awhile to find loans to fund, as the site was crazy for a few days after the Oprah show.

Anyhow, would love to hear from gay/lesbian/friendly folks here about why you got into kiva.

Hey Scott and Mark,

I'm not gay, but welcome to this site! I guess you'll find loads of interesting people here from all walks of life!

As a starter for you, there is one group that popped to my mind when I read your post:

Gay Buddhist Fellows in San Francisco. They even have a website.

Greetings
Oli

Welcome ScottandMark!  (Yay, another dual-named KivaFriend!  I would have used DianeandCharlie but that didn't fit and special characters wouldn't work, hence my DianeCharlie name.  So far it's always been the "Diane"-half of the duo posting here, though. Smiley )  We're from Northern California, too.

(I don't want to hijack your thread, but did want to say it's interesting to hear from folks who started at Kiva during the Oprah/Today Show week, and who stuck it out to lend to multiple businesses and are now becoming active in KivaFriends.  Maybe in a new thread we could talk about what that experience was like; there's a discussion in the "Long-Term Plans" thread by some who've been here longer, saying it's hard for them to find a loan they like now. You could add an interesting aspect to that discussion!)

Hi Oli, Diane and Charlie,

Thanks for the replies. Smiley  We'd love to find some other gay kivans (we've been using our gaydar on the other lenders' pics, but no confirmed hits yet <grin>), but we're also happy to hear from other folks out there.

We read some of the threads on the site yesterday, and love the diversity and the fact that there are lenders from around the world involved in loas with us.

Diane and Charlie, where are you guys at?

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Well, in the absence of any other gay and lesbian folks posting in this topic yet, let me pose a question - I've been wondering if the fact that we're an openly gay couple might end up being an issue with anyone in the countries Kiva serves (like the folks we're lending to), since many of them don't have the most liberal outlooks when it comes to gay issues.  Any thoughts?

Might be a problem for some of the Muslim countries.  But then I think for strict Muslims we would all be infidels.  I don't know about the others.  And now (drum roll)...why are you particularly interested in finding other gay or lesbian people on Kiva?  Would the outlook on things Kivan be different for a straight person?  Just curious, and you do not seem to be the kind of people who would take offense at this question. Hey Steff,

There's a certain worldview gay and lesbian folks share (tho rumors of a monolothic gay community are vastly overblown).  It's just nice to find other folks who see the world thru the same lens as you do... the same way folks of various racial and ethnic groups often seek each other out.

It's also partly born of curiosity - you look at all those other lensers' pics, and you wonder - are any of them like me?

OTOH, I sure don't mind conversing with all kinds of different folks, both orientations and worldviews. Smiley

Does that make sense?

Yes, that makes sense and answers my question very well.  Thank you.  Smiley

Welcome, Steff - so tell me more about you - how did you find kiva?  What kinda loans do you like?  What's your worldview?

Scott and Mark,

Enjoyed talking in chat with you the other night.  My hopes are that you find lots of gay friendly folks by being so open about it.  Kiva seems to be about learning about people and cultures, and I suppose this is a culture, too.  So I would not worry too much about the borrowers' beliefs.  Loan as you see fit!
