I really, really am trying to get out of here, but I just discovered that incredibly, I already received an answer to a question I posed, only yesterday, in a comment to a journal posting I’d written.

I thought it might be useful for us to have a thread where any of us can propose possible worthy projects for KivaFriends to get involved in -- related to our giving special help to some one Entrepreneur or another who seems to have a particularly compelling need.

Since I’m running, right now,  I’m only going to quickly say that my first “nominee” is Regina Jose in Mozambique who seems in pretty desperate need of a new wheelchair.

Regina Jose - Mozambique

To see the pertinent Journal posting and the correspondence that ensued from same, go to:
Hmmm-mm.  Something got messed up.
So, all you have to do is click on this link then, scroll down to the journal posting and click on the blue hyperlink, there, that says "Comments (5)."

                                                                                                                                                   Thanks, you guys.....

EDIT: Thanks, Soriak.  PayPal may be the way to go.  Beatriz, hopefully, will be posting here soon with some thoughts.

Link doesn't seem to work Sad Try this one: http://www.kiva.org/app.php?page=businesses&action=comment&id=14249&ent=57056

I'd be happy to contribute to a wheelchair for the woman though! Is there a way to do it reasonably through Paypal? Another international wire transfer would add unnecessary cost to it Sad

Sadly, the Paypal account we had been using for the Mama Mark Fund and other collections has been frozen by Paypal to investigate as a possible terrorist funding account or something.  I have JUST WITHIN THE LAST WEEK received a letter on letterhead stationary from James Maina at EbF which may convince Paypal to unfreeze that account, in which case I could offer my standard "collect there and send international wire for free" service.

But this all depends whether I can get Paypal to unfreeze the account.

Anyone want to see if someone at Kiva would like to help intervene?  I am utterly exhausted with going around in circles with Paypal on this issue and don't really have the oomph to pursue it again.

What about a western union international money order.  Last I recall when attempting to send one to an acquaintance in Morocco, the cost was only about $15, although the total cost may depend on the total being sent.  I do know there are sending limits per month, but they may vary by location.

Im sure a cooperating MFI or field worker would be willing and able to cash it in, or even use the funds for what they are intended.

It appears funds sent online to a Mozambique account through Western Union could reach to $999.99 per month and at a service charge of $18.50 if sent from CT.  Wildly enough, if the same transaction is sent from someone in Ohio, the fee jumps to $81.  California is $18.50 as well, while Washington like Ohio is $81, to give some examples.

Anyone want to work on the approximate costs of a wheelchair in Mozambique?

I find not direction in the readings of those with whom my eccentricities are similar, but rather validation.

My only solace is that I find a peaceful place where I might be resigned to my depriving loneliness.

I located this organization. I briefly scanned the information and they have Mozambique listed as one of the countries for wheelchair distributions:

Great find Margie--I wonder if they permit person specific donations, or if this entrepreneur would somehow have to find her way onto their list.

It appears that Regina Jose lives near Maputo and , according to this newsletter dated 2001, there may be a distribution center available.  Perhaps the info can be passed on to the field partner.

The Wheelchair Foundation page for Canada has this virtual tour of the wheelchairs they provide...
followed up with a detailed description of the how-tos in giving wheelchairs in undeveloped countries...
I don't want to be negative however it sounds like more than just an MFI rep going to a store to buy one.

I will send a question to the contactus email address and see what I get back.

I just read the latest blog from Beatriz Mauro - she sounds really depressed.  Even after reading field partners blogs for a while, I can't even imagine what that life must really be like.  Perhaps sending money for her to buy a wheelchair will perk her up?  Maybe we really can do this?
